My Book: Mrs. Lee's Color Code Revision

Hi, friends. I want to introduce you to my brainchild, Mrs. Lee's Color Code Revision: A Visual Revision Strategy for Academic Essays. While teaching composition at the college level, I realized that many students don't know how to revise their academic essays beyond grammar and punctuation. So I developed this strategy to help students pinpoint the content in each paragraph that could be improved.

Color Code Revision book by Alana Lee

Mrs. Lee’s Color Code Revision
reveals an innovative revision strategy for improving academic essays. Students often don’t know where to begin when asked to revise an essay beyond grammar and spelling errors. Color Code Revision gives students a starting place as well as a strategy to focus their revision efforts into creating well developed paragraphs with supporting details. This book starts with how to color code and then moves on to commonly asked questions regarding color coding and its connection to the revision process.

The Color Code Revision strategy works best with formal academic essays, including various types of research papers, research reports, rhetorical or textual analyses, position papers, evaluations, summary response essays, and book reviews. This strategy can also be used to help improve informal writing during the drafting process.

The Color Code Revision strategy has been used successfully at the college level for developmental English courses, freshman composition, and advanced composition classes. Additionally, Mrs. Lee’s Color Code Revision is a great writing resource for middle schools, high schools, homeschool, and tutoring centers. It will benefit those needing “chunking strategies” to help with learning differences.

Mrs. Lee’s Color Code Revision can be used:

  • as a supplement to any writing handbook or English textbook (as this book does not provide lessons on grammar or conventions).
  • as a supplement text to any class that requires the writing of at least one polished essay.
  • during in-class revision workshops. It works best if the instructor models the process on several paragraphs, preferably using a student sample of the same genre as the assigned essay being revised. Then the student can use this book as a guide to begin the color code revision process in his or her own paper.
  • during peer reviews.
  • as a self-guided revision tool for any student who needs to revise an academic essay even when this book is not a required text for the course.

Praise for Mrs. Lee’s Color Code Revision: “I loved the Color Code Revision workshop!! I have never seen anything like it and now I use it with every class paper I write.”

“What I found most helpful is the colorful rainbow to help me execute a great flow in my essay.”

“The rainbow Color Code Revision is an amazing tool!”

If this could help you or someone you know, please check out the kindle/ebook and paperback versions on Amazon and Apple Books.

*Note: Because so much of success depends on one’s ability to write, Mrs. Lee believes everyone should have access to books that improve writing skills, so she keeps the kindle edition priced low for wide affordability.

How to Sew a 3D Origami Face Mask (Illustrated)

This illustrated sewing tutorial will use the Adult S-M size and is slightly different than my original DIY sewing tutorial for making a 3D Origami Face Mask in two ways. This tutorial instructs you to insert ear tie tabs/straps before creating a trifold and to topstitch all the way around once ear tie tabs/straps are inserted. This is my preferred method after sewing hundreds of masks using this design.

Step 1: Place two pieces of pre-cut mask fabric with right sides together. (Click here to see how to create a template to make cutting easier.) Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance along the edges marked in the illustration, leaving the right and left sides open.

Step 2: Notch corners to prepare for turning inside out.

Step 3: Before turning inside out, fold open ends in at 1/4" and iron flat. Repeat on back side. You should have ironed 4 folds. Next, flip inside out and press seams flat.

Step 4: For this step, you can use ribbon (heat treat the ends) or bias tape straps. The straps or tabs will hold the ear ties in place. I cut mine at 2.5" and slide them in 1/4" into the openings. Topstitch around the entire octagon starting on the right side. I use wonder clip to hold my straps in place, but you can also place the straps as you go. Avoid using long stitches for this portion because you want to securely tack the straps into place.

Step 5: Create a trifold by folding the top and bottom flaps toward the center. You want to make sure the height of the trifold correctly matches the size you are sewing.

Step 6: Your trifold should resemble the illustration below.

Step 7: You will sew the trifold in place. Use the appropriate spacing from the right and left end depending on the size of the mask you are sewing (see table below). Then use a 1/8" seam on the top and bottom of the rectangle. Remember to backstitch to secure the ends of your broken rectangle.

Step 8: Open the flaps outward and fold the ends with straps toward each other. While the mask is folded, pin the flap-folds in place as shown in the illustration. (I prefer to use wonder clips for this step.) You will have four places with pins or clips to hold the folds in place while you sew--this creates the origami design.

Step 9: This part is easiest if you open the mask partially and sew with the interior fabric facing up. The mask will not lay flat at this point because of the origami folds. Tack the origami folds in place as illustrated below.

Step 10: You're almost done! Add ear ties (about 10" for each ear loop if using t-shirt yarn), or create ties that wrap around your head from t-shirt yarn or parachute cord (with a cord lock).
