Candy Cane Poem Bookmarks: "The Symbolism of the Candy Cane" by Alana Lee

It's easy to make festive bookmarks or gift tags with this candy cane poem using the FREE downloads below. They are great for punching a hole, tying some ribbon, and attaching to a candy cane. Please Note: Don't trim the top and bottom edges so that you can punch a hole and tie it at the top (only trim edges on right and left). Just click here for 5 per page or here for 8 per page to download the file and print. (I originally posted jpegs, but they weren't good enough quality for printing.)

The Symbolism of the Candy Cane
by Alana Lee

Turned upside down, the cane makes a “J”
for Jesus who was born on Christmas Day.

Turn it upright like the Good Shepherd’s staff;
He pleads to the Father on your behalf.

At the top you’ll see the saving crook,
Used on the lost sheep He never forsook.

The stripes whisper softly, “By his stripes we are healed.”
And the red represents His blood that was spilled.

The white gives us hope to become pure as He,
by forsaking our sins, white as snow they will be.

The peppermint oil that flavors this treat,
is known for its strong healing properties.

Now each time you see the striped candy cane,
Remember, dear child, He knows your name.

Inspired by the "J Is for Jesus" poem and "The Legend of the Candy Cane." © 2007-2014 Alana Lee. I don't mind if you share this poem for non-commercial uses, but please be honest and give credit.

Candy Cane Poem Bookmarks

If you're looking for a cute, simple gift idea for teachers, students, or whomever, have I got something for you. I wrote this little poem about the symbolism of the Christmas candy cane.

The Symbolism of the Candy Cane

Turned upside down, the cane makes a “J”
for Jesus who was born on Christmas Day.
Turn it upright like the Good Shepherd’s staff
Who pleads to the Father on your behalf.
At the top you’ll see the saving crook,

by forsaking our sins, white as snow they will be.
The peppermint oil that flavors this treat,

Now each time you see the striped candy cane,
Remember, dear child, He calls out your name.

Just click on the image above and print it. Each poem should have a 1/4" border around the outside of the red box.

Make the Candy Cane poems in into festive bookmarks or gift tags! The printables are great for punching a hole, tying some ribbon, and attaching to a candy cane. Please Note: Don't trim the top and bottom edges so that you can punch a hole and tie it at the top (only trim edges on right and left).

Looking for quiet activities to keep your toddler and young children busy? These are sure to do the trick!

Perfect for entertaining your kids: on road trips, during church meetings, Sacrament meeting, in waiting rooms, in hotel rooms, during nap time or quiet time, or anytime you need some peace and quiet.

Introducing 11 Quiet Activities & Puzzles accented with exciting colors teach your children creativity and problem solving!
  • Harmonizes left-brain and right-brain, turning them into better students with better grades.
  • Entertains them in a skill-building, proactive way, as opposed to the spectator sport of TV and mindless movies.
  • Children constructively occupied have a lot less time and inclination to disobey...which sure makes being a mom a lot more enjoyable.
  • Gives children a head start and competitive edge when they start school.

Given the choice, wouldn't you rather have a child who enjoys entertaining themselves by doing things that develop their brain, creativity and eye-hand coordination...than to always be providing spectator entertainment that leaves them without any sense of accomplishment or self-worth?

Simply slip the main activity/puzzle page into a heavy sheet protector (or laminate), laminate the small pieces and cut out, and use velcro or double-sided tape to make the pieces stick. When the smaller pieces are not in use, I just slide them into an envelope and slide the envelope into the sheet protector.

Family Standards

I created "Family Standards" for my family to help us with establishing rules and for parenting. This is a wonderful way to display your family's beliefs in your home--it is both useful and beautiful. Your family will have no question whether or not something is allowable.

The magic of "Family Standards" comes from the terminology you use. When you refer to "rules," it's a natural human tendency to rebel against said "rules." However, if you refer to what your family "believes" and what your "standards" are, you will most likely get more cooperative results.

For example, if little Lou steals a pack of gum from the store, you state firmly but lovingly; "Little Lou, our family believes in being honest. Stealing from the store is dishonest. What can you do to make this right?"

Or if Ben punches his brother in the jaw, you state: "Ben, our family believes in being kind and respecting other people's bodies. What can you do to make it right?"

Or if little Hannah says, "You're mean, I hate you!" (Hopefully you never have to hear this.) You state: "Hannah. I'm sorry you feel that way. But our family believes in using kind words. How can you express your frustration using kind words?"

Here are some examples you can get started with:
We believe in loving one another.
We believe in obeying God’s commandments.
We believe in being honest and virtuous.
We believe in being kind.
We believe in being helpful.
We believe in being grateful.
We believe in saying thank you.
We believe in the power of prayer.
We believe that our bodies are temples.
We believe in following the prophets.
We believe in doing fun things as a family.
We believe in good music.
We believe in being clean and safe.

I printed two copies and framed them. One is downstairs by our family picture gallery, the other is upstairs.

If you'd like me to customize your family standards for a beautiful and useful wall hanging (that you can frame), just click on "add to cart" and email me a customization request. If you'd like me to match colors of a room, just attach a picture!

Please allow 2-4 business days for your file once I receive payment confirmation.

Just print your custom file as an 8x10, mat it, frame it, and display! (As low as $1.50 a print; separate printing charges apply.)
